Listen to... Mariah Carey - The art of letting go

Mariah Carey - The art of letting go | Random J Pop

Mariah titled her song after the song thing she has had the most difficulty doing ever since Butterfly. Letting go of the fact that Tommy Mottola fucked her over. Letting go of the fact that you look no better shot from your right hand side than you do your left. Letting go of the fact that your titties do not look hot in a halter neck. Letting go of the fact that you are not able to fit into the same shit you were wearing when you was signed to Coumbia records 14 years ago.

But with all this Mariah has at the very least delivered something different with her past 3 singles. "Almost home" was a ballad cut from a cloth none of her other ballads have been cut from. "#Beautiful" was Mariah featuring on what is essentially a Kaledisocope dream bonus track and now "The art of letting go" has Mariah going 60's ballad style on us all.

"The art of letting go" is a grower. I wrote it off the first time I heard it. But it continually grows on me the more I listen to it. I love the production and the arrangements, but the lyrics and Mariah's vocals for two thirds of the song let it down. The lyrics are the same old thing we've heard Mariah sing about before. Dealing with the side effects of an old love. Feeling isolated. Asking an old flame to delete her out of his phone. We got half an album of this shit on Memoirs of an imperfect angel and no amount of orchestrated strings and needle crackle can disguise that. Vocally Mariah sounds nice, but there's a vocal texture a song like this needs more of and Mariah doesn't give much of it. Even if Mariah manages to sound good technically, it can't compensate for soul and I don't feel like there is enough of it in this song. Not in comparison to what Adele and Amy Winehouse had given us on similar, far superior sounding songs.

It took a while for me to warm to this song, but I do like "The art of letting go". For me, it is one of Mariah's better singles from her The art of pushing back era. I prefer it to "Hashtag Beautiful" because it's just her. That song was just Miguel featuring Mariah anyway. I don't know who this woman was trying to kid.

  1. As a new publicity stunt I want Ayu and Kuu to cover "When you believe" by Whitney & Mariah. Imagine listening to Ayu's vibrato(r) while Kuu is making cry-faces. *heaven*

  2. You mean watch Kuu completely trample Ayu in the dust to When you Believe by Whitney and Mariah XD

  3. Po' thang!! Okay, not really. She's the one who screwed up her career, not anybody at Avex. Homegirl should have never snatched control of her image from them, because it's very plain to see that the female has *no* idea what to do with it >_<

  4. It's so damn sad. I literally want to show her some inspirational videos on YouTube and get her shit sorted out.

  5. It's a nice little ditty and all, but Mariah needs someone to take her out of her comfort zone. She can't expect to do the same thing she's been doing forever when other artists (like Adele, as you mentioned, and Arianna Grande, who snatched her wig off while she was still wearing it) have moved in on her genre and beat her at it. The whole upping the register at the end of the song feels like someone handed me the last stale-ass donut before 9pm closing time. Sure it'll do, but I could've had something else.

Now I'm not saying I expect Mariah to drop and pop it like it's hot, but she needs to apply this song to her ego and try some new things while the game is still letting her attempt to be relevant in it.

  6. What she needs is a nigga on her ass to show her how to be retro without being outdated. Because Feel the Love is so very outdated.

  8. I've never been a huge fan of her music but seeing her turn into a mere shell of her former self music and image wise is disheartening. She is capable of so much more. I guess when you live in a glass castle full of $$$, you only listen to yourself.

  9. seeing that in many posts you say that ayumi is struggling with dem hit songs and then seeing the image and that the actual single is called "struggle" made me laugh so hard at the office yesterday. and i still laugh about it!thnx!

  10. Thank you... I love her but she needs to get a grip, Ditch this tired Gyaru look and go back to Glam Diva Ayu and get a new frickin team. She's only in her 30s so she isn't too old to still be big but it seems like she's just having some midlife crisis or something.
Really she seems like Britney in that neither seem to be there for the music they make right now which is why I've been wishing she'd take a couple of years off and come back when she has the passion again. It's not like she'll be forgotten, she's AYUMI HAMASAKI ffs... and absence makes the fans grow stronger.
