Sunmi gives us a PG-13 acid trip in "Lalalay"

Sunmi gives us PG-13 HBO Euphoria in "Lalalay" | Random J Pop

Ex-ex Wonder girl Sunmi is back with a new single "Lalalay", which is pretty much business as usual for the quirky K-Pop starlet. Sunmi had a definite style from "Gashina" onward and "Lalalay" is pretty much a continuation of that and all that came after.

This music video was basically like watching a PG-13 episode of Jules' acid trip in HBO's Euphoria.

I like the video. Sure. It's similar to "Gashina" and "Heroine" with all the colours, the sets and the numerous setups. But it's a fun video and Sunmi looks like she's having fun. As was the case with her previous music video for "Noir", "Lalalay" exudes more of Sunmi's quirky personality that fans have known and loved from her interviews and variety show appearances. Over time Sunmi has started to show more of her goof and aloofness within her Sunmi the idol persona and it's nice to see.

But, then there's the song. I would have liked "Lalalay" shit so much better if it had a different chorus. I am so done with these generic ass drops for choruses. "Noir" was a far better song that won me over because it channelled a similar vibe to two of the songs that Sunmi wrote on The Wonder girls' Reboot ("Rewind and "Faded love").

Whilst "Lalalay" is pretty regular by K-Pop standards, it's nice to see Sunmi's own brand and personality come through in both the song and music video. A year deep into her second attempt at a solo career and with a successful world tour under her belt, she's believing in herself that she's cut out for this pop star shit and it shows.
