SM have unleashed their new boy band SuperM. A group made up of select members from other groups and acts under SM entertainment; unveiled in an elaborate global campaign with press taking place in the US, in a bid to finally have an SM act break through in the States off the back of BTS' mammoth success.
SM were one of the first K-Pop labels to attempt breaking their acts into the US BoA. Then Girls' generation's "Gee" unintentionally kick started the Hallyu wave that brought us to this very point. But Slave Master entertainment have yet to have an act of theirs truly make is in America, so they must be bitter about it on some level, as one of the longer standing and most prolific K-Pop labels in the game right now. Which is why they#re doing the up-most with SuperM.
SuperM's music video looks like it had a ridiculous budget to put it on par with what a popular pop star would get if they went to Dave Meyers. And to give the group something mega in pop culture to springboard off and have them be part of the conversation, their debut song "Jopping" features what sounds just like the damn Avengers theme. Yes. The one from the films. As a tagline for SuperM is that they are the 'Avengers of K-Pop'.
Cap would never.
I'mma just be frank. I do not like this song. Not even a little bit. I think it's garbage. I fully checked out after hearing the lyric ♪ Cuz we jumping and popping, we jopping ♪.
"Jopping" just isn't a very catchy song. It seems to want to do everything BUT be a good song. So much focus was placed on slapping in a popular movie reference, trying to make the whole thing sound big, and slip in a term that the writers hoped would catch on and become a viral hashtag, that folk seemed to forget that there needed to be a really good song at the end of it all.
This whole braggadocious 'YO! WE'RE AN EDGY LOOKING BOYBAND WHO CAN DANCE HARD' angle just feels tired to me. It would have been nice to have seen everything dialled down and for SM to have had SuperM come out with something far smoother, but still with a pop to it. I've listened to SuperM's EP and "Jopping" is hands down the worst song on it. The. Worst. Them coming out with something like "2 fast" would have been my personal preference, as it's a great song, with a great sound that's catchy and perfect for radio. But if it had to be one of these angsty types of songs, then "I can't stand the rain" would have been a better pick. Basically, anything from the EP but "Jopping".
I'm all for a flex of a music video budget, but this music video was a lot like the song. It tried to do too much and include references and nods to other shit to such an extent that the creative team behind it forgot that SuperM needed to have A LOOK and a brand. I didn't come away from the "Jopping" video with any real sense of what SuperM's flavour is. All I came away with is that this video was basically a cross between Taylor Swift's "Bad blood" and "Ready for it", with a bit of Akira thrown in.
It's a real shame, because the guys of SuperM seem to be talented. And Taemin is from a group who had delivered some really great songs and visuals which were so much better than what he's a part of here.
