Music video: Girls' Generation's Taeyeon releases "Spark" | Random J Pop

With Girls' Generation pulling out the sofa bed and kicking it in limbo, SM is like 'Fuck it' and doing the solo thing again with Taeyeon. And after a week of snippets and teasers that I was sick to death of by day three, it's just a relief to have a full video and the damn album out.

Taeyeon's second full length studio album Purpose is lead by the song "Sparks" - which is basically a budget straight-to-DVD Dreamworks production version of Adele's "Rolling in the deep".

The thing that's always prevented me from getting into Taeyeon's solo material is that there's just no personality in any of it. It's all so bland. And it's never like the music is so good that it compensates. And whilst I can now say that there is a definite sound that SM are trying to stick with Taeyeon, it still needs refinement and something that makes it Taeyeon's. Any of the Girls' Generation girls could sing this song and any of the songs on her album.

SM seem to have given Taeyeon a sound that's kinda comparable to Kelly Clarkson's, minus the Dr. Luke and Max Martin productions. The problem is that Taeyeon doesn't really have the tone nor the right type of energy to own this sound, and it's a glaring issue I have with "Sparks". It's a nice song. But it needed more than Taeyeon gave or what she can actually give.

Taeyeon's second full length album Purpose is available on all streaming platforms now. I might review it. But in case I don't, the jist of how I feel about it is basically all of what I've already said. There's just no personality, no fire, no heart in any of the songs. I got done listening to it and immediately forgot what I'd been listening to.
