Another day, another Black person murdered by police who aren't in jail despite their kill being captured on a damn camera phone. And when people rise up to protest in the US, the Police are out in the streets having fun aggressively arresting Black folk and attacking protesters left and right like they're try'na get a damn Xbox achievement.
It is beyond mess.
There was absolutely none of this energy when white people were on the streets protesting with automatic rifles so they could go outside without a mask on and take their already edgeless, already balding looking ass to a hairdresser.
America is racist is fuck. But we been knew it.
Protests aren't just happening in the US, but around the world - because whilst the US is seen as the poster child of police brutality against Black people and racism, it does exist EVERYWHERE. And the death of George Floyd and the actions of the police in these protests raises the question - if this is how the police are acting when they're knowingly on camera, what the fuck is happening when they're not?
I'm based in the UK, where the argument of 'The UK isn't racist' always crops up when shit pops off in the US. And lemme me tell you. The UK absolutely is racist. There are parts of London I will not go to because of the reputation they have for being racist. I've been pulled over by police several times on 'suspicions'. I experience racial micro-aggressions on a weekly basis. And one of the UK's biggest murder cases was the murder of Stephen Lawrence, at the hands of white supremacists back in 1993. The killers were only convicted in 2012 because of all manner of corrupt investigations and cover-ups by the police.
Racism is global y'all. And it's not just white people who're racist. It was a person of colour who called the cops on George Floyd and an officer of colour who stood and watched him be murdered - which is what makes the global protests even more relevant and necessary.
If you are going to attend a protest, particularly in the US, please do be careful. Not only are the police and the President Ompah weave piece endorsed unpoliced hooligans out to instigate violence, but we are still in the midst of a pandemic. So be sure to go out with masks, gloves and as little of your body exposed as possible. But if you're concerned about protesting because of the pandemic or you don't do crowd, don't feel guilty. Do what you can from a social distance.
The following link is a great resource for everything concerning the protests and links to different charities and bail funds that you can donate to in order to help the cause.
