I had not watched the teasers or read anything on Taeyeon's "#GirlsSpkOut" prior to watching the music video. So 30 seconds into it, I was shocked to realise that it was in Japanese. I just assumed it was a Korean release.
I guess with SM having SuperM capture the global market, their other boy bands holding it down in South Korea, they needed to have an SM act release something in Japan. Enter Taeyeon.
It's cool that despite the song being in Japanese, it still retains the sound and style of Taeyeon's Korean material. When SM entertainment's acts used to release J-songs, it would usually differ (i.e Girls' Generation) to their K-songs. But I would like to hear "#GirlsSpkOut" in Korean. When Girls' Generation used to do songs in Japanese there was this set way in which every syllable would land and it was the same across every song. There's just no real variation or sense of flow with how they sing in Japanese, and it's something that's still prevalent with Taeyeon and "#GirlsSpkOut". It's not something that's exclusive to members of Girls' Generation. It used to be a thing with TVXQ too.The song itself isn't all that great. It's pretty forgettable, and Taeyeon barely seemed into any of it in the music video, but I do like the message. Although the music video paints a different context for the song than the song alone. The song is more of a 'Go chase your dreams' vibe, where-as the video is more of a 'Don't put up with men's bullshit' vibe. Both are good and advice to be heeded.
I guess by this point, we should assume, if we hadn't already, that Girls' Generation is dead. SM have clearly put all those GG chips on Taeyeon's solo career, 'cos they ain't stopped pushing this chick since Tiffany, Seohyeon and Sooyoung slid those contracts across the table and said 'No bitch'. I wanna know what the hell Sunny is doing at SM Entertainment. Cleaning mirrors in the dance studios? Handing out pay slips? What'cha doing bitch!? Because all I've seen of her in two years is an appearance in a TikTok.
Taeyeon will release her EP also titled #GirlsSpkOut on November 18, which will also included 2019's "I Do".
