Beyoncé stays trolling her fans over a music video for “Break My Soul”

Fans still cannot believe that Beyoncé has not released a music video for her single “Break My Soul”, and are losing their minds wondering if she has shot one at all. Ever since the surprise release of her self-titled album in 2013, Beyoncé has opted to do things a bit different with each of her releases. And with Renaissance, it seems to be reverting back to rolling out an album in a semi-conventional manner, but with a twist. That twist being that releasing a single and an album with not a single music video. Which would be pretty unorthodox behaviour for any artist, but is a noticeable one from one who has built their brand largely on not just music videos, but an abundance of them for each album.

Some people, such as myself, have speculated that one of the three acts that Beyoncé has in store for us could be the visual component to Renaissance. Yes, I know in the thank you section of the Renaissance inlay Beyoncé says ‘This three act project I recorded’. But I’m still wondering if these three acts will just be 3 albums. Whatever the damn case turns out to be, Beyoncé is having a little too much fun trolling the Beyhive, knowing how badly they want a music video. First that teaser on YouTube which had a premiere and everything. The the official visualiser for “Break My Soul”, and now this ‘cliquebait’ video which features video footage of Beyoncé on her disco horse, Neighoncé.

Shout-outs to post production and retouching. Because Beyoncé’s otufit and that horse don’t look anywhere near as slick and as expensive as they did on the album cover. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually built that horse though. When I first saw the album cover, I assumed that only the saddle and part of the body was made, and the rest was all VFX. But they built that bitch.

I would very much like a music video for “Break My Soul” and other songs on Renaissance. But I’m not expecting every song to get a music video. That shit is just not sustainable for every single album. But also, it loses impact each time. Beyoncé has always been a visual artist, and seemed to have continued to carry the torches of both Michael and Janet when it came to shooting a whole bunch of music videos. We could argue that the likes of Ayumi Hamasaki and Kumi Koda in Japan carried those torches at one point, because those bitches were shooting ridiculous amounts of music videos for albums long before Beyoncé did it for the first time with B’Day.

I do think it’s kinda cool that Beyoncé (for now) has chosen to just let the music speak for itself and to allow everybody to have their own version in their minds of what each song looks like to them. Only a select few artists in the game could release a single and an album, and have them be a hit without a music video. One wonders if this is also part of Beyoncé’s renaissance. To hearken back to a time when songs charted because people latched onto the music, and not just because of a music video. Or it could be Beyoncé trying to get us anticipating music videos again, because it’s become such a given that a music videos drop the same day a new song does, so there’s no real phasing of releases any more, which sucks out some of the anticipation. Music videos aren’t events they used to be. But Beyoncé has fans waiting on a music video for “Break My Soul”. And if Beyoncé announces a release date for it, she will have everybody sat waiting on YouTube, the day of release. Then every artist will be like ‘Maybe I can drop my music videos at a later dates’. Yes you can bitch. This everything, everywhere, all at once approach to releases has gotta stop.
