Perfume face off against Emperor Palpataka in the music video for "Megu Loop"

ith Perfume’s new album Nebula Romance: Part 2 releasing digitally today and the physical release imminent — Perfume HQ dropped a music video. I assumed that we would get a music video for an album cut, as was the case with Nebula Romance: Part 1, and as was also the case with Plasma, Future Pop and LEVEL3. But we got one for “Megurupu”, “Megu Loop”, “Mega Man Poo Poo” — whatever the damn song is called. I guess this should have been expected, in light of the song being a Chihayafuru tie-in and Perfume’s previous songs for the franchise getting music videos. But it sure woulda been fun to have seen Kikimo whip her pink wig and pop her puss-e to “Reboot World”.

I don’t have that many thoughts on this music video. It was cute. It’s just nice to see a Perfume music video.

I think it’s a shame that Perfume didn’t release a music video for each of the Nebula Romance singles, as it would have given Perfume Studios more screen-time to build the world of it outside of the tour — especially as the music alone doesn’t really build this world and carry the narrative of ‘the story’ as well as it should have.

My favourite part of the video was the ending where we see a younger Perfume dancing to “Linear Motor Girl”. That was the part that really got me and made me think ‘Damn. There is actually a cool story we coulda gotten here.’

The theme of “Megu Loop”, Mikiko’s self referencing in the choreography and the final moment of the music video really should have been the foundation for what Nebula Romance was about and how the album was branded. Especially given that time, the perception of life, dreams / virtual realities, cycles, looking back and re-doing things have been consistent themes of Perfume’s music over the past few years and seem to be the core of what the songs on Nebula Romance are about. As sick as I am of multiversal and time travel stories, I do think that would have worked here as the framework for telling this story. It also would have given Perfume PR so much to work with in terms of how to promote the album and it would have worked nicely off the back of Perfume’s Code of Perfume gigs and the sentimentality of their upcoming Tokyo Dome gig which will bookend Nebula Romance.

I think it’s a shame that a story about Perfume looking back on life or imagining different versions of it got sidetracked with the whole Sci-Fi thing about robots, Emperor Palpataka, an Army of the Light and whatever cult Kikiminaj is running.
