Music video: Haim kick of carefree white girl Summer with "Summer girl" | Random J Pop

Life is strange.

For the past week I've been listening to Haim and was thinking to myself 'I wonder when these girls are gonna drop some new shit'. Then BAM. New song. New video.

"Summer girl".

Carefree white girl Summer has officially started.

"Summer girl" is far more laid back than I was expecting based on the title and it just being Haim. Their singles usually hit a little harder and pretty much straight-up Pop songs. This is on a completely different vibe than anything that Haim gave us on Days are gone or Something to tell you, but it's nice. The chilled Lou Reed "Walk on the wild side" type vibe a nice change of pace for a lead single from a group who could have given us another "Change your mind" or "Little of your love" and had everyone be cool with it. And whilst it may not be what I expected from Haim, it's still them. In fact, this sound is probably more of what you'd expect from Haim if you'd never heard any of their music before and just saw pictures of them. They're always so chill, laid back and completely unbothered, and that energy is captured completely in the song. The flip-side is that the song was born out of lead singer Danielle being completely bothered, after finding out that her boyfriend has Cancer.
"I started the song when I found out my partner had cancer. I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically. Whenever I would come home in between shows I wanted to be his sunshine - his summer when he was feeling dark. His hope when he was feeling hopeless."
Whilst the song may be a departure of sorts, the music video is familiar ol' Haim. Nicely directed visuals courtesy of Paul Thomas Anderson, some quirk and general round-the-way'ness. With Danielle showing off her midriff, Alana with a new hair colour and this new type of sound, the girls walking around L.A shedding layers feels very symbolic.

No word as of yet on their third studio album, but it's coming.
