Ayumi Hamasaki remembers her days of relevance, with lyric videos for 2 songs from LOVEppears | Random J Pop

On November 10th, Ayumi Hamasaki had released a 20th anniversary edition of her second studio album LOVEppears. For those who can't pin an Ayu song to an album, but are familiar with covers, it's the one where she was topless and had hair covering her titties. The same shot that she did in blackface for the single cover to the album title (kinda) track "Appears".

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, she released lyric videos for 2 songs "To be" and "Appears". Both of which feature previously unseen footage of Ayu performing the songs and behind the scenes footage of the music videos.

Lyric videos aren't very common in J-Pop. They've become popular in the US as ways of having a song be available on YouTube before a music video is completed, or to ensure that the song isn't uploaded to YouTube with just a static shot of an album cover. Some lyric videos look better than others. Some have more effort put into them than others. Some lyrics videos look like damn music videos in themselves. So it's something to see Ayu jump on the trend, drop a couple of her own, and give her fans something new they'll love, as opposed than clipart floating across the screen, which her stans would fucking love anyway.

Ayu's new music ain't doing nor sayin' shit. So she'd be far better off just pimpin' out her old shit. Drop AYU-MIX albums. Put more unseen footage of shoots and performances on YouTube. Stay releasing anniversary editions of old albums. Make people remember the legacy that was built before it all fell to shit from Party queen.
