Crystal Kay lets us know that the cover album is coming. Like...it's REALLY coming. Actually.

Crystal Kay lets us know that the cover album is coming | Random J Pop

Crystal has been busy over these past couple of years. Sure, her discography page on Wikipedia and the ORICON charts may say differently. But outside of releasing music, Crystal has been performing at small venues, doing a Broadway show and rehearsing for another. But she took time to let fans who remember when a bitch did music, that music IS coming and that the sporadically mentioned cover album IS happening.

Crystal took to Instagram to give fans a status update on the cover album. I can't read Japanese and I'm not even gonna get into it with Google translate. So I don't know if she's only started recording the album or if it's done. But what we can be sure of is that it is definitely happening and Crystal has recorded SOMETHING.

There's no word on what the final selection of songs is, or a release date. But it would make sense for the album to drop around June of this year, which is when Hairspray opens in Japan, in which Crystal stars as Motormouf Maybelle. The first single could well end up being a song from Hairpsray itself; which would make my eyes roll, but would make sense from a marketing standpoint to capitalise off of something as big as Hairspray hitting Japan for the first time.

I used to turn my nose up at cover albums, but Japan has given us some great ones. Angela Aki's Songbook, Kumi Koda's Color the Cover and Beni's first Covers album to name a couple. That Hikaru Utada cover album was some trash, but I will call it out, because Ayumi Hamasaki did a stand-up job with her cover of "Movin' on without you", which was basically he only song most people cared about prior to its release.

I didn't think much of Crystal Kay's last two albums. But I shall rejoice at the thought of us getting some CK music in 2020. Even if it's all covers.
