Everything about the "Rain On Me" music video is pretty on brand for Gaga and what she's given us since Born This Way. She's also really letting us know that this Chromatica shit is a whole ass thing, and that y'all best get used to her wearing pink. The Monsters will love this, as will the Arianators who lived for "Break Free".

But I'll be honest. I found the video to "Rain On Me" to be a bit of a mess.

Lady Gaga has gone through an interesting transition as an artist. She was once about giving us poise, production and elegance. Then she started to give us Club Kid vibes, where the veneer started to peel away and things started to get a bit rougher around the edges. The lines stopped being clean. Everything stopped looking crisp. It was actually nice to see Lady Gaga let some of that shit go. It's what made the "Stupid Love" video so fun. But I also think there's a balance with it. And some times, depending on the song and the video treatments, we do need the lines to be clean and for the edges to be sharp.

"Rain On Me" looks like it wants to be a big, clean, rich production, but still has that raw, rough around the edges quality - but they don't co-exist well together at all. The cinematography in this video wasn't great. The editing choices didn't always make sense. The styling was messy. The special effect shots are a mixed bag. And then there's the choreography, which is one of the worst offenders. It doesn't hit the way it should for a song like "Rain On Me". There needed to be something sharper and easy to mimic. Not just lots of hand waving and moment jacked from Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" at the end.

This isn't a video which will be remembered for how good it looked. It will just be remembered as the video that had Gaga and Ariana together. But I guess that's all it needed to be.
