Chloe x Halle have been in this game for a minute. But "Do It" is probably going to be a first introduction to their music for many, and it's pretty much what everybody involved was banking on when they put this song together and chose it for their big single.
Chloe x Halle's sound has always skirting around the more experimental reaches of R&B, falling somewhere between Miguel and Janelle Monáe. Nothing the girls had released seemed like it was for the purpose of garnering a hit on the charts, but "Do It" is a different beast entirely. Because it feels like the first song of Chloe x Halle's which sounds like it was made with the intent of being a smash hit across the board.
"Do It" has a beat which sounds chart ready, courtesy of Scott Storch, who is no stranger to hits, having helmed a couple for the likes of Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera. The sound has Trap elements that will latch onto the youngsters and the Hip-Hop heads, but also had an old school R&B groove with its zippy basslines that fans of the genre of all ages will dig. And despite the song straddling the line between Hip-Hop and R&B, it has a really Pop style hook, courtesy of Ariana's once secret songwriting weapon, Victoria Monét. However, despite the engineering of the song being primed for chart success, it doesn't jeopardise any of what Chloe x Halle had done prior or feel like its a bastardisation of their sound. It's just another facet of it.
There are many charms to "Do It". A whole bunch more if you include the music video. But one is in how many contexts this song can fit into. You can buss down to it. You can two step to it at a wedding. You can drive to it with the top down. You can work a pole to it. You can kick back and relax at home to it. You can blow a back out to it. You can even play the shit in Church. It is just an effortless ditty of a song. Short, sweet, and not trying to do too much, whilst doing everything.
"Do It" did that.
