In the midst of K-Pop is Yukika. Eschewing the usual-suspect K-Pop sets and sound stages, and the chasing for a popular Westernised sound. Instead, taking a step back in time with City Pop.
As some of you may have guessed from the name, Yukika is Japanese. Korean artists releasing music in Japanese is commonplace. But it's rare to see a Japanese artist releasing music in Korean. It's understandable as to why. It's easier entering the Japanese music market than it is to enter the Korean music market unless you came up in it. And Japan is the second largest music market in the world. So if you started there, and you make it there, there's no real incentive to even bother with other markets. And then of course there is the historic tension.
"Soul Lady" is Yukika's lead song from her album of the same title. And the video runs with the City Pop aesthetic. Badly fitting dresses, big earrings, some awfully framed shots and the clumpiest swap meet heel.
This is so refreshing. It's nice to hear something different from the standard idol K-Pop. And with YouTube algorithms still working in City Pop's favour, Yukika is sure to have many stumble upon this and become a fan.
Let us also take this moment to remember when Wonder Girl Yubin gave us a City Pop serve with "Lady" back in 2018.
If you wanna find out more about Yukika, Pop Sori did a cool video last year chronicling the timeline of her career right up to her Korean debut.
Yukika's debut album Soul Lady was released on July 21st and is available on all streaming platforms.
