Music video: Mamamoo release their self-empowerment Disco bop "Wanna Be Myself", and they might catch a lawsuit
The ever problematic and eternally hated Mamamoo have released a new song "Wanna Be Myself". A Disco flavoured self empowerment anthem, which is fitting for the girl group whose members (especially Hua-Sa) have been the target of hatred from netizens for a good while now.
It took me a while to actually get into this song properly, because it immediately reminded me of Raye's criminally overlooked single "Natalie Don't". Certain types of Disco records most certainly have a sound, and it's no secret that Raya's song is influenced by Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". But sections of "Wanna Be Myself" sound almost exactly the same as Raye's "Natalie Don't" to the point where I feel it was the source of inspiration for Mamamoo's song and not an original Disco classic from way back.
K-Pop borrows, copies and steals from Pop and R&B all of the time, so this isn't such a reach.
The song itself it still decent, but the deep house bridge was a mess and just felt like it was thrown in because K-Pop still fucks with Deep House and the producer figured 'Let's give them a twist as not to rip of Raye's song completely'. The whole thing should've been kept classic Disco. And the bridge should've been a really nice string laden affair, full of drama and then followed by a key change. Sometimes less is more, but that how it go in K-Pop. Never forget Girls' Generation's "I Got a Boy". Never forget.
