With Kylie having released an album of disco cuts appropriately and simply titled Disco, I wanted to flashback to 10 years ago, when Kylie first dipped her whole foot into disco. Some would argue that "Step Back In Time" was disco, and I'd pull this face and make noises. Let's just say that "Spinning Around" was the first song that everybody could unanimously say was 100% disco, capturing the sound and the look that we all associate with the genre during its heyday in the time of Studio 54.
"Spinning Around" quite literally saved Kylie Minogue's career from spinning into the point of no return. After a 3 year absence following a phase which saw Kylie try different types of music and go through some image changes, Kylie did what most pop stars who start out in bubble-gum pop do: rebel against it in a bid to 'find themselves', only to realise that they were never anybody or anything else. They just had to step away from it to see it, and be able to acknowledge that even if they hated where they started, it played a part in placing them right where they needed to be - something which is actually mentioned in the lyrics to "Spinning Around".
"Spinning Around" not only set Kylie back on the right track, but built a foundation on which Kylie solidified her sound and her look - enabling her to give us an album like Fever, which catapulted her in a whole new way and secured her career and her future to be able to release a flop and a hoe-down album, and not worry about losing everything.
And "Spinning Around" is just a fucking great song which sounds better than half of Disco. And Kylie looks great in the video.
It's a good thing "Spinning Around" was a hit. Could you imagine putting out a song about being a brand new bitch with the lyrics 'I know you're feeling me 'cos you like it like this' and it barely charts!?

Did I forget to mention that I found a new direction and it leads back to meIncredibly fitting for a comeback Kylie song, especially considering that it wasn't written specifically for her, but for Paula Abdul, by Paula Abdul herself amongst others. But po' thang wasn't given the music career lifeline that Kylie was, so she never got to release the song. But American Idol came knocking for her anyway.
