Under the radar girls group Boys World have released their debut EP, and with it, a music video for a song which features on it. Those of you who check into Boys World with "Girlfriends" can expect more of the same from "All Me". Pop trap beats with rubber band bass, a catchy ass song primed for radio and a music video with a bright ass colour palette and camera moves so fast that it'd make even a K-Pop fan squint.
Boys World have potential. Lord knows we need a new US girl group. But I really hope their sound grows and diversifies beyond songs like this. Boys World have the look, they have the talent, and they seem to have a pretty dedicated online following. But unfortunately for them, we're at a point in music where many will hear songs like "All Me" and immediately be reminded of Ariana Grande, to a point they may even mistake the song for one of hers. Ariana didn't create this whole trap pop sound, but she helped popularise it. And it's not just how the song sounds, but how Boys World sing it, with their 'Yeah' ad-libs once again sounding like Ariana. But'cha know what? If this helps the group get put on in a big way, then, whatever.
Boys World haven't really blown up yet though, and I wonder if their 'Could be Ariana or any other number of people' sound may be the reason why. This anybody-sound-itis is something that's plagued Little Mix since day one, but they're so damn big now that they ain't even gotta worry about their sound (although they damn well should). It's a shame, because Boys World is marketable. "Girlfriends" had BIG hit potential.
One small thing I'd urge the group to do is have each member stick to a style trait. Yes, it's basic. But it's tried, tested and true. Because even if you don't know a member's name, you can identify them by their style. In the early days of Destiny's Child, it was Kelly Rowland always having the shortest hair. With TLC, it was T-Boz always having a blonde bowl cut. In the Spice Girls, it was Mel B having her mane of curls. In the Powerpuff Girls its Buttercup being green. Boys World seemed to have a colour theme going on in this music video, but it kept switching between setups. I was like 'Oh, Miss Orange is the Black girl'. And then somebody else was Miss Orange. Pink haired girl been knowing from the beginning.
Hopefully Boys World's team can start to get it together. And will they get it together and hold it together long enough for us to get an album? We shall see.
Boys World's debut EP While You Were Out is available on all streaming platforms.
