Kumi Koda to release an EP ‘Wings’ in January 2023, and treat one of her concerts like some side bitch

A shot of Kumi Koda, posing with her hand clasping her face, whilst wearing a white dress with lace detailing, with her hair down and coloured shades of grey.

All seemed pretty quiet on the Kumi Koda front. I thought she may have given up on her career as a pop artists and become an influencer given her last few Instagram posts about Black Adam and Bruno Mars. But then a fax came through that she is dropping something in January.

The fax coins this release as a ‘Music & Live’ package, because it comes with a second disc which features a symphonic concert Kumi did earlier this year. But it is basically an EP.

“Wings” and “It’s ‘K’ Magic” will both receive music videos, which are also included with the limited edition physical release.

This package is such a strange offering. I’ve called Kumi out numerous times for shamelessly splitting releases, or releasing too much in too short of a window. But this is one release I feel could have been two separate releases within a 3 month window - for the sake of better packaging and easier marketing.

Wings should have been an EP, with music videos for each song on a second disc. And Kumi’s Premium Symphonic Concert should have been a home release which came with a CD featuring the live album. Kumi could have dropped her Premium Symphonic Concert DVD / Blu-Ray for Christmas, and the Wings EP in February for Valentine’s Day. Two physical release packages with clear themes, which are easy to market during two commercialised cultural events, rather than this ‘Let’s just lump everything together’ release.

Also, Kumi’s Premium Symphonic Concert was too damn good to just be relegated to some bonus disc on an EP. It was one of Kumi’s best concerts and set of performances in a while. It absolutely deserved to have a stand alone release. And live album of it would be of comparable quality to her cover albums.

HENNYWAY.

Kumi looks great in the promo shots. The grey hair colour really suits her.

Wings releases on January 18, 2023.
