Flo releases “Losing You”. And I don't care what y’all say, it’s a Christmas song.

Flo might have just swooped in and dropped one of my favourite songs of 2022 y’all.

Flo’s fourth single “Losing You” has knocked me sideways a little. Because I truly didn’t expect Flo to release a song like it, even though all the signs were there that they could and that they would.

As per all of the Flo singles we’ve gotten so far, “Losing You” a complete throwback to the R&B sounds of the late 90s that we tend not to hear a great deal of anymore, unless it’s running back the classics from that time. And as with “Cardboard Box” and “Immature”, “Losing You” shows that not only do Flo have a very clear sound and vibe that they’re going for, but they have a team around them who truly do know their shit and are able to pull together to execute it. Flo’s music manages to tread the line so well between sounding classic and era specific, but featuring references and moments which are very in this moment and of the time.

“Losing You” is perfect for this time of year, on two fronts.

Firstly, it’s an apt time of year to really start thinking about the things you want to carry into the new year, and the things you do not. It can be a tough conversation to have with ourselves, especially when it involves people and relationships. But sometimes the things we cling to and feel we can’t be without, end up being the things that are holding us back.

Secondly, “Losing You” is a Christmas song. Period. “Losing You” doesn’t need clear Christmas signalling. The cosiness of the song and video give off Christmas vibes to me. But none-the-less, I would have liked Universal to have had Flo shoot a second, more Christmas themed video - bringing back the white fur coats and walking around in the snow aesthetic that J-pop ran full sprint with in the early noughties. And to also have commissioned a more seasonal version of the song, with sleighs bells and a few extra twinkles here and there. Not only to really settle into the cosiness of the song (despite it being about getting rid of a deadbeat), but to help the song’s chances of being a contender for a Christmas number 1 in the UK. Because there’s not much in the way of competition this year. Also, I think a ‘No n***a Christmas song’ is a great angle. Maybe not a mass marketable one. But still. I guess Flo could always revisit “Losing You” in the future and Christmas it up.

Side note. This is the type of shit I want from Crystal Kay.
