Album just dropped and Perfume already have a new song on the way — “Fumetsu no Anata”, for the anime series To Your Eternity

An image of Fushi from To Your Eternity, stood smiling — as Perfume stand behind him, aiming their guns at his back.

Perfume’s ninth studio album Nebula Romance: Part 2 was only very recently released digitally. At time of writing, the album is not even available physically yet. The album probably hasn’t even gone to print. And here we are, with Perfume having already announced a brand new tie-in, which features a whole new song.

Perfume LLC is making everybody WORK.

Yasutaka Nakata hasn’t left the studio since 2019. His roots are jet black from where he hasn’t been able to keep up with his hair frying appointments. And Mikiko is on the verge of a breakdown — having received a text that she needs to have new choreo done by Sunday, so that Perfume can include it in their Tokyo Dome rehearsal on Monday. And this has been her life for the past 4 years. And in the midst of this she’s also having to choreograph shit for Babymetal.

Perfume’s new song is titled “Fumetsu no Anata” and will act as the opening theme song for the third season of the anime series To Your Eternity. Fumetsu no Anata is the Japanese title of the show, so this new song was created specifically for the show. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if the sound of the song shared similar sonics to Nebula Romance: Part 2. But on the other hand Nakata coulda said ‘Fuck it’ and has already moved on from the 80s sound, with Nebula Romance: Part 2 closing the chapter on it. I’m really eager to hear how this song sounds, especially in light of Nebula Romance: Part 2.

To Your Eternity is an anime series that Hikaru Utada fans will be some-what familiar with, as Hikaru’s song “Pink Blood” was the theme song for seasons 1 and 2. It may also be a series that Final Fantasy music fans are aware of, as composer Masashi Hamauzu composed the ending theme song for season 1. Final Fantasy XIII was…not that good. But two things about that game which were amazing — the battle system and the soundtrack. Hamauzu composed the shit out of that soundtrack and delivered what is easily a top tier Final Fantasy battle theme. Not an easy thing to come up and do for a franchise whose music is so synonymous with Nobuo Uematsu, the work of whom many FF fans revere.

To Your Eternity bagging theme songs from Hikaru Utada, Masashi Hamauzu and Perfume for its first 3 seasons is bonkers. That Crunchyroll and NHK money is LONG.

Perfume sure are playing fast and loose with all of these song tie-ins. Whilst it’s great exposure and also a great sign that they can still get high profile tie-ins at this point in their career, I do wonder if they should perhaps slow things down or space things out. Then again, with some of these tie-ins, Perfume PR probably doesn’t have all of the control when it comes to the timings.
Season 3 of To Your Eternity debuts on 4th October. So we’ll definitely be hearing something of the song in September. It would not surprise me in the slightest if Perfume debuted a performance of it at their Tokyo Dome show on the 22nd and 23rd September.
