Listen to “Fumetsu no Anata” — Perfume’s last song before they pack it up for their hiatus

The third season of To Your Eternity has premiered, which means that we get to hear Perfume’s song for the show — “Fumetsu no Anata”.

I am not feeling this. I don’t find it catchy. It feels like a step back from the quality of some of the songs on Nebula Romance: Part 2. And generally, the song doesn’t have any real [turns and looks into the camera] flow. It’s like Yasuataka Nakata wasn’t really sure what to do with the arrangement or structure of this song, so he just did whatever. Like, how in the hell Nakata did make me screw my face up and dislike a saxophone solo!? That shit came out of nowhere. There’s just not enough in this song for me to grasp, aside from ‘Oh, this also sounds like it’s cut from the same cloth as Metro Pulse’. I liked that album. But, damn. Nakata, switch it up sweetie. Just a little bit.

It’s a damn shame that this is the last song we’re getting from Perfume for a good while. Given the title of the show and the premise of it, there was a real opportunity for Nakata to write “Fumetsu no Anata” in a way which doubled as Perfume’s ‘goodbye, for now’ song and to really deliver, but he fumbled. The bag wasn’t even in the same prefecture when Nakata put this song together.
