“idea1” is barely out the door and already Kelela has put on a new wig and released a new song and video. So, now here we are with another song with another odd title all in lowercase with no spaces, “linknb”. And sonically “linknb” carries a similar sound to “idea1” in that it features a guitar. So the gay who said that Kelela’s album is probably gonna be shoegayz, they might be on the money.
Kelela pisses me off. Because, what do you mean that this song is only 1 minute and 30 seconds long!? The criminally short runtime is the only thing about the song I can muster talking about right now, because I’m still in a state of processing it. Sometimes I hear a Kelela song and I am at a loss for words trying to describe how I feel about it. “Enough” made me feel this way. “Far Away” made me feel this way. “Raven” made me feel this way. And now “linknb” does. By the time I write my review of Kelela’s upcoming album New Avatar, I’ll have something to actually say about the song. Until then though,
this Instagram post sums up how I be listening to it.

I can talk about the video though. It’s great. It really matches the late 90s / early 2000s vibes of the song. And it’s also really nice to have a music video shot outside and on location. I think American music videos have gone the way of American films and TV shows — shot far less on location than they used to be. And, listen. I get it. It’s much easier to control environments on sound stages than on location. VFX shots are ‘easier’ to do now than before. And also, because of social media and everybody whipping their phones out to record whenever they see something being filmed outside, it creates a level of hassle that nobody wants to deal with. So whenever I do see American shit shot on location, it just feels different and evokes a different type of feeling. I just feel far more aware of it than I used to, because it feels like lesser of a norm than it once did.
HENNYWAY.
The video is great and so is the song.
