Flashback Friday: Kelela - Rewind | Run it back

Today marks the release of Kelela’s third studio album New Avatar. So it’s only fitting that today’s installment of Flashback Friday flashes back…or rather…rewinds back to an oldie, but still a goodie from Kelela.

I’m 80% certain that this was probably the first song that I had heard from Kelela. In fact, I am 100% certain that this was the first song that I had heard from Kelela. Because I remember thinking ‘WHO IS THIS SONG BY!?’ and then Shazaming the shit out of it and then starting my journey to become part of the KELELGBT+.

Kelela has no shortage of great songs in her discography. But there is just something about “Rewind”. Every time I hear it, it does something to me. I just wanna move. And whilst Kelela has grown artistically and musically since “Rewind”, it can still sit alongside everything that she’s released since. Even at this early point in her career when she’d released “Rewind” 10 years ago, Kelela had a sound and a clear point of view when it came to her artistry. And it’s been so amazing to watch Kelela really sit in it and expand the world that she created musically. But it’s sucked to see Kelela not get the volume of attention that I feel that she deserves. Because if there was any Kelela song which shoulda been a huge breakout hit and a commercial smash, it’s “Rewind”. Let us all put out copies of Hallucinogen in a circle, light a candle and pray that via some random TikTok trend or an inclusion in a big film soundtrack, that “Rewind” ends up becoming a late hit. At a later date I’mma ask you to whip out your copies of Raven and do the same for “Contact”, but that’s a whole other post.
