So, here's something rather unexpected, yet not unexpected at the same time. Perfume will be performing at Coachella this year. No need for me to bang on about how big this is. It's fucking huge. And if their 2015 SXSW performance is anything to go by, I'm sure we're going to be in for a treat and a half, as well as the market for new wigs.
The Coachella 2019 line-up generally looks bomb and features a nice range of acts. But Perfume aren't the only act to be representing East Asia...
Blackpink will also performing. Blackpink have been absolutely killing it and had been gaining traction in the US a good while before BTS broke through. With BTS having the hallyu wave blow a hole in the hull of the US music scene, it makes complete sense for Blackpink to come through and show that the girls of K-Pop go just as hard as the guys.
I'm sure CL is hitting up Scooter Braun and asking why her ass still don't have an album out and why she couldn't book Coachella. Gurl.
Us Perfume heads know that the girls are going to knock this performance out of the damn park and that their stage production team are going to go the fuck OFF. Nobody in attendance is gonna have any clue who Perfume are. But they 'bout to leave that field bald and be telling people Perfume is the reason why they now have alopecia.
My only concern with Perfume doing Coachella is that there will probably be no activity or marketing to support the fact that they are there. Coachella is one of the biggest stages in the US that the girls will get to perform at. Their team should be booking Perfume to star in Apple commercials and billboards. Hollering at UNIQLO to appear in one of their Spring campaigns on the run-up; 'cos people will be so broke after buying those tickets and booking those flights, that UNIQLO gon' be the only place they can afford to buy any damn clothes. Ensuring that there is a live stream on their official channel of their performance and getting that shit up and archived on their YouTube channel the same day. But these are all things that I know their team won't do. Perfume's team never capitalise on any form of exposure they get outside of Japan and it makes me wonder why they go to the trouble of booking them for such high profile gigs in the first place. Yes, their SXSW performance was ground breaking and amazing. Lots of online media outlets covered it. But then everything in regards to it completely fizzled outside of Perfume's core fanbase.
Perfume's marketing team have been a problem for a good minute and I foresee a slew of missed opportunities with this Coachella gig. I guess we'll just have to rejoice at the thought of Perfume coming through under the radar and making Ariana Grande's set look basic. Because they fucking will.
I pray to Jebus that their setlist isn't Future pop heavy. They need to give a retrospective of bops and hits, 'cos Future pop ain't it.
