Mariah ' No-middle-name-but-it-shoulda-been-Patricia' Carey will be releasing a music video for her criminally underrated and under-promoted bop "A no no". And she's releasing it on the same day Captain Marvel hits cinemas. March 8th. Her fucking mind.
It seems that that Mariah's team didn't go with the video treatment that I'd produced, but it's okay. Mariah looks great (I don't know why that ponytail has me feeling some type of way). The video looks like it'll be fun and my OCD concerning visual consistency is glad they went with the pink and blue colour scheme to match the album cover.
I've been cussing out Epic records ever since Caution released, because they only seemed to promote that shit in New York and nowhere-fucking-else. And whilst the New York promo was lovely dahling, Mariah is a global artist. So to just do nothing for the rest of the world, even if it was purely digital (because I know a bitch was touring and it was Thanksgiving and Christmas) was just messy.
It took me 3 weeks to find a physical copy of her album in a store here in the UK and I went to big ol' retailers in Central London; only to find it in some independent record store. Chile, really!?
But, it's better late than never. And I've been a long-time advocate for artists giving their albums the time of day after it releases. These days we get an album release date. A tour announcement. The album comes out. The tour starts. And that's it. The tour is literally all the promo the album gets, which is great if it's a world tour and you can get tickets to that shit. But we never get single releases post album launches anymore and we'll be lucky if we get music videos. I wish this would change across the board. Especially with artists who are popular enough, have enough of a following and also money to fund this shit themselves in the event that their label refuses to write a cheque. So it's nice to see that "A no no" will be getting itself a music video, because it's what fans have been calling for since the song first hit the Internet.
There is no word on whether the music video will also be the premiere of the oft rumoured remix featuring Lil' Kim, Cardi B and Missy Elliott. But we'll see tomorrow. With the video clearly being so NYC with its inclusion of its iconic subway carts, it'd be a further shame to not include fellow NY natives Lil' Kim and Cardi B on the track. I'm sure we'd get a Queen Radio episode from Nicki the next day comparing herself to Rosa Parks.
I'm just glad this song is getting a video, because it deserves to be a smash either way.
Here's to hoping that we get a video for "The distance" too.
