Music video: Tiffany Young is dickmatised by a Werewolf in "Magnetic moon"

Ever since Tiffany told Lee Soo-Man 'Y'all will not get my life for another decade' and opted not to renew her contract with SM entertainment, she has been out in the States flourishing. She's released singles, music videos, an EP, gotten coin from H&M, is now getting coin from Disney and has a new single and tour on the way, both titled "Magnetic moon".

This music video is a nice mix of presenting Tiffany in a different light to how we had seen her in Girls' generation, but still retaining a vibe about it that makes it easy to imagine it being a Girls' generation video if the other 8 girls were dropped in. It also gave me slight Ariana vibes. A touch of "God is a woman", a hint of "No tears left to cry", with a bit of the Sweetener world tour stage concept.

But the song tho.

"Magnetic moon" sounds like an unfinished demo. Tiffany's vocals sound oddly effected, and the chorus is lacking that extra punch and more in the way of instrumentation to really bolster it. Additional production to give the whole thing a layer of finesse could have made this into something really great, because there is a really good song here. I like the lo-fi 80s vibe and the chorus is catchy, even if I had to peep the lyrics in the video description to make out that Tiffany was singing 'Pulling me to you'.

If "Magnetic moon" is giving you Lady Gaga vibes (as it did me), it's because the song is produced by Fernando Garibay, who has produced songs for Gaga and was the musical director for her Born this way ball.

The glaring thing with all of the songs and visuals that Tiffany has given us so far (including I just wanna dance) is that she doesn't really have her own style or sense of ownership. Something of which seems to be a common thing with many acts within SM entertainment, aside from a select few who had a strong sense of who they were prior to signing to SM and brought that to the table, i.e Amber of f(x). If Tiffany really wants to go to the next level and extend her reach beyond Girls' generation fans, then she needs to give something more and hone in on establishing a sound and a look that's hers. You could drop Taeyeon into these songs and videos and they would be no different. Which speaks to why these groups are formed as groups in the first place, and why very few members who go solo manage to sustain the level of success they had as part of a group. Not everyone is made to be solo. Others are destined to be.

K-Pop is so group-centric, that I don't think we'll ever get a solo K-Pop act really blow up in the States, unless it's somebody who has broken out from a group that has already had mad success. But that doesn't mean a chick shouldn't try.

But props to Tiffany for living her best life and showing the girls that there is life beyond Girls' generation regardless. She's not quite at BTS or Blackpink levels of fame outside of South Korea, but she's doing enough to be here 7 singles, 1 EP and a tour deep into her solo career; which is more than can be said for BoA when she last tried to do the thing in the US. But it's all in the timing. Tiffany could not have picked a better time to give the US Pop star thing a shot. It's somewhat of full circle moment, given that it was Girls' generation's "Gee" that helped kick start the Hallyu wave way back when. Not all of Girls' generation could make it, so Tiffany had to cling to that piece of wood like Rose in Titanic and let them other bitches go.

With "Magnetic moon" it's difficult to tell if this is the step in the right direction. It is just a step in a direction.
