Brandy's daughter Sy'rai covers "At Your Best (You Are Love)" and shows that she's got the background vocal gene
Brandy's daughter decided to give the music thing a go with the soft release of a cover of The Isley Brothers' "At Your Best (You Are Love)", which many forget that Aaliyah actually covered and that the version most of us know is the remix of said cover. At one point in time I used to fuck with that remix. But given R. Smelly produced it, I can't listen to it anymore.
Sy'rai's cover is based loosely on the remix of "At Your Best (You Are Love)", but sounds so different between the music and the way in which Sy'rai sings it, that it feels like its own thing entirely.
Genetics really be crazy. Sy'Rai looks exactly like her father. But sounds exactly like her mother.
Sry'rai sounds so much like Brandy that it's downright crazy. She sings exactly like Brandy, and bitch. Those background vocals?! It wouldn't surprise me if Brandy were involved in the arrangements, but it'd be no less remarkable just how much like Brandy Sy'rai sounds. Musical talent isn't a given, even when that's a parents' entire being - so it's really nice to hear that Sy'Rai indeed inherited the singing gene from her mother.
There's no word on if Sy'rai will release more music, but I hope it happens. This cover has already got me wanting an album.
Sy'rai has a really nice voice which will only get better and stronger if she sticks with it and treats it right. Just look at Brandy. The growth her vocals went through from her debut to Full Moon was insane, and it's not something she's given even props for. Because not every singers' voice gets better.
