202020 features interviews with those who have worked closely with BoA over the years, including her brother who has directed some of her music videos (and this documentary), Mr. SM Entertainment himself Lee Soo-Man who doesn't do a great deal of interviews, and SM songwriter Kenzie who has written for most of BoA's albums. Kenzie's inclusion is a big-ass deal, because this woman NEVER does interviews or appears on camera. Despite being such a huge fixture in K-Pop and a massive part of SM entertainment, photos and info on her is scarce. The documentary also featured re-creations of some of BoA's music videos, which surprisingly included "Eat You Up", despite her US debut album not being available on streaming platforms globally.
The whole BoAseum and the re-creations of BoA's music videos was cool. Having full versions of them would've been cooler. It would have been really great to see SM artists cover BoA's songs and re-create / reimagine her music videos as part of that Our Beloved BoA mess. But we got what we got.
BoA's Better will be released on December 1st. I can't see SM doing a great deal for it given how they've barely done anything for BoA's albums in the past. Starry Night came and went without so much as a party popper. And with SM's new girl group Aespa having debuted, and the other SM releases and comeback teasers all hitting now and throughout December, BoA's gonna get completely lost in the shuffle, as she has done over the past few years. It's like SM care about BoA, but they don't.
