Random J Playlist: Crystal Kay Ballads

Random J Playlist: Crystal Kay Ballads | Random J Pop

Whilst Crystal Kay is known for her R&B sound and happiness inducing pop bops such as the likes of "Koi ni Ochitara" and "Konna ni Chikaku de...", Crystal has some amazing ballads in her discography. Crystal saw great success with "Motherland" (thanks to its inclusion in Fullmetal Alchemist), "Kiss" and "Kitto Eien ni" (which was used for a live action adaptation of Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru, a story about incest - GURL), but was never an artist who released ballads with the regularity of many other J-Pop artists.

Judging by her single releases over the past couple of years, and the tracklist for her 2021 album of covers, it seems the ballad angle is one that Crystal's record label is now wanting to make good on. The problem with most of these ballad releases we've gotten thus far is that they've been forgettable songs which give the impression that ballads are not her forte, which couldn't be further from the truth. Crystal's December 2020 single release "I Love..." was a nice and very necessary reminder that Crystal can deliver a great ballad. So there's no reason nor excuse for having her releasing dustiness. Her team clearly don't care about showcasing Crystal's talent, but that's a whole 'nother post for another time.

So, here's a playlist full of reminders that Crystal can do the damn thing with a ballad and a slow number. Her team should dip into this and run it back for inspiration, and a hard listen at how they're wasting Crystal's talent.
