Rina Sawayama performs “This Hell” at Radio 1’s Big Weekend

Rina’s second performance of “This Hell” was at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, an annual music festival type thing here in the UK which is free to attend. I forget this shit still happens annually, because rarely do artists I actually give a damn about perform at it. But Rina performed at it this year. So I guess I’m giving a damn about it in 2022.

As with Rina’s debut performance of “This Hell” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the audio was letting the side down. Rina’s mic was on, but the level wasn’t high enough. Again.

The mix of the song that Rina performs to doesn’t help matters either, as it’s difficult to tell when Rina is even singing. Rina’s lead vocals through the mic are at the same volume as the backing track vocals. So even though Rina is out there with the mic on, it seems like she’s not. Well until she hits a bad note. 3:43 was nasty.

Hopefully the mic levels and the mix of “This Hell” is something that will get finessed the more Rina performs it. Or she could just mime the whole thing. I wouldn’t be mad at that. I know she can fucking sing. And having come fresh off the back of a world tour, during which she was also recording an album, and now going straight into performing “This Hell” every week - resting her voice and just lip syncing would do her some good. But I know she won’t. Rina gon’ make sure that mic stays on, even when the sound team be fucking up.
