Music video: Rina Sawayama drops a visual for her rapidly rotating storm system characterised-by a low-pressure centre anthem, “Hurricanes”

Rina Sawayama looks into the camera, as the wind blows her hair into her face. Clarence Clarity (Rina’s music producer) can be seen out of focus, standing behind behind her.

Rina Sawayama’s second studio album Hold the Girl is finally out. And with it comes a music video for it’s fifth single “Hurricanes”.

This video appears to be set in the same world / setting (universe?) as “Hold the Girl”.

I guess Rina didn’t run that far from the house in “Hold the Girl” after all. She just went next door into the barn. She musta realised ‘Oh, wait. I have no money and no Oyster card to actually go anywhere.’

It was nice to see her partner in crime Clarence Clarity in a video. I don’t know how he’s managed to go so long without making an appearance in any of Rina’s videos.

Having listened to Hold the Girl, the album confirmed what I figured was the case by the time we were on the 75rd single. Which is that the singles we got after “This Hell” were to better sell the sound of the album we were getting, which “This Hell” doesn’t reflect. But “Hold the Girl” and “Hurricanes” actually having music videos and featuring the same creative direction, whilst “Catch Me in the Air” and “Phantom” didn’t get videos at all, and “This Hell” looked so different, makes me think that maybe the original plan wasn’t always for “This Hell” to be a lead single at all. Perhaps “Hold the Girl” and “Hurricanes” were set to be the first two singles. This would explain why “Catch Me in the Air” and “Phantom” got no music videos, because they weren’t planned to be singles, or to release as early as they did. And releasing them early was definitely a mistake, because neither of those were songs for the summer.

The roll out for Hold the Girl has been a bit of a mess. And it’s a shame the singles got short changed, because they all had huge commercial potential.

HENNYWAY.

I‘ll talk with you more about the album when I review it in 2053.
