SM Entertainment have Red Velvet and Aespa fill in for Girls’ Generation for “Beautiful Christmas”

As SM Entertainment tend to do every year, they’ve released a couple of Christmas songs, one of which features both of their girl groups Red Velvet and Aespa; which is great if you’re a fan of either of these groups. Although the end result is a song and music video which feels as a generic as the song. And neither group is highlighted in any particular way.

One thing about SM, is that sometimes they truly do not give a fuck about maintaining a particular sound or visual style for their acts. Everything they’d built with Red Velvet and Aespa went out of the window for this, because everything about “Beautiful Christmas” was Girls’ Generation as HELL. And I honestly think I would have liked it more had they just done it, even though I feel they need to move past this type of look and sound. And this raises a question: Why didn’t SM just have Girls’ Generation do “Beautiful Christmas” in the first place? Surely SM could just had them record the song and shoot the video back during their comeback.

Having Red Velvet and Aespa be a Girls’ Generation tribute act for this song was a waste. SM shoulda hsd them do something which felt more reflective of them both. I think back to f(x)’s “Wish List” (which criminally received no music video). It wasn’t some typical ass cutesy Christmas song. It was a Christmas song in a style you would expect from f(x) at that point in their career post 4 Walls. And it’s unfortunate SM didn’t give Aespa or Red Velvet the same courtesy. Especially in the case of Red Velvet, who have effectively inherited f(x)’s sound and kooky visual concepts.
