Super Junior release a music video for their Christmas song “Celebrate”, without a single shot of the whole group

I used to follow Super Junior. I knew all of the members’ names. Knew all of the sub-units and everything. But as time went on, Super Junior’s music got more generic, and SHINee came along and gave what Super Junior shoulda been giving; I just stopped listening to their music and paying attention to their shenanigans. “Sexy, Free & Single” was when I tapped out.

Even though it’s been a while since I followed Super Junior, there’s a nice sense of familiarity watching the music video for this Christmas song of theirs. But also a sense of ‘What and who am I even looking at?’.

“Celebrate” is a nice song. But I find it difficult to really settle into, because it sounds so much like The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” with a bit of Wham’s “Last Christmas” thrown in, to the point that those songs are all I hear in my head.

My suspicion is well and truly fuelled that Red Velvet x Aespa’s “Beautiful Christmas” was intended for Girls’ Generation, and that SM Entertainment’s plan was to have their second generation brother / sister groups put out Christmas songs around the same time.

Of the big three, SM Entertainment is the only company that still has a boy band and a girl group from the second generation who are still active. Well...kind of, in the case of Girls’ Generation. It would have been a great package and a story, in addition to also doing something that K-pop rarely ever seems to do, which is honouring history. K-pop just burns through acts and then puts them out to pasture, regardless of the impact they’ve made. Look at BoA. Younger K-pop fans do not give a fuck about her, and even SM give her short straws. And then there’s Blackpink. Already fans wanna act like that group is brand new, when they are just 2NE1 with different members and a discography which is nowhere near as good.

SM should definitely consider sorting out those contracts from now to get Girls’ Generation together in 2023 for a Christmas song. And fix whatever the fuck prevented a full group shot of Super Junior. They couldn’t just green screen Siwon? Or use that technology they used to put BoA and Xin together in the “Better” video?
