SM Entertainment release the music video for GOT The Beat’s “Stamp On It”, and I have a headache

Despite SM Entertainment debuting their super girl group GOT The Beat a year ago, only now have we gotten a music video from them. And...

It’s not that great. But it’s exactly what we expected. It's a pretty typical SM video.

I think releasing the Kwangyafest performance first lessens the impact of the music video, because we’ve seen the whole routine before, and the general vibe of this music video is exactly the same as that of the performance. Even one of the sets is the same. It’s like when Perfume released the “Polygon Wave” music video after we done saw the incredible live performance of it, and several great televised performances of the song. This is the risk you run when you release a video of a performance before a music video, and the music video doesn’t offer anything new or different.

The biggest offender of this music video however was the camera work. K-pop is known for its chaotic camerawork in music videos and performances, but this shit was next level. I couldn’t even watch the video in one sitting, because I was getting a headache 1 minute into it. There was too much sweeping and moving around. And it also detracted from the dance routine, which is actually pretty decent when you get to see the whole thing properly. So I don’t know why the director was swinging a camcorder on a fishing line like Lakitu in Super Mario 64.

The sweeping camera moves were cool in Aespa’s “Black Mamba” during the whole superhero landing part of the choreo. But it was too overused here and unnecessary.

The music video says anything about the group, which is crazy for a group formed of members who are either from groups with distinct(ish) vibes. And SM didn’t pull this shit with Super M, where each member was still delivering who they were in their original groups. Where-as here, BoA and Hyoyeon are the only members who still feel like themselves, where-as everybody else is playing a role.

It sure would be nice for SM to start focusing on developing their acts as individuals, instead of just focusing on blanket concepts which everybody just has to fit. It robs acts of their identity.

And something this video really highlights to me is that BoA shouldn’t be in this group. I think her being in it is cool. But something about her presence in it feels off. But on the whole, GOT The Beat is just a mess. What the group could represent is cool, but the concept for this video and the sound are terrible. And their mini album is also garbage. There’s only one song on it I think is half decent, and even that is still bad.
