I knew better than to get my hopes up for this music video, because...Just look at the material we've gotten over the past couple of years.
I have to think hard about the last time we got a SOLID music video from Perfume which had some re-watchability. So I went into the "Polygon Wave" video with no expectations. And yet, Perfume still broke that back and Ciara'd their asses under them. To say that the "Polygon Wave" music video is underwhelming would be an understatement.Perfume and their team really sat down and decided that Kashiyuka the Uber driver would make for a great music video for a song like "Polygon Wave". Which it would have, if a bitch was Tokyo drifting and throwing that car around like Initial D.
It's annoying that this turned out so fucking bland, because "Polygon Wave" is one of the better songs Perfume have released in quite some time. And yet all we got some Next-Stage-with-You-in-the-Polygon-Wave Tesla commercial bullshit, with a bit of dancing.
A common theme with Perfume's music videos as of late is cool ideas, but boringly executed. This was the case with near enough every single video from Future Pop. It was the exact same deal with "Time Warp". And we get the same shit here with "Polygon Wave".
It was cool seeing Perfume in non performance outfits doing bot girl shit, but they were just...sat in a car. It was cool getting close ups of them (which aren't common in a Perfume music video) but they were just doing Capsule impersonations. The dance setup looked SO good, but all of the sass and the energy of the live performances just wasn't there. And the performance was inter-cut so much, that it didn't highlight just how good the routine is (easily one of Perfume's best) and there was seldom a moment to catch enough of it for fans to try it out for themselves - which is probabaly why there's a dance practice video of it, which was also bafflingly edited and cut together.
The whole video was basically Capsule's "Hikari no Disco" without the epilepsy and any real kind of vibe, and it's lazy.
Mama. This is garbage.
This music video is too basic in the worst way for a group with a creative team as good as the one Perfume has.
Perfume's music videos used to be great. They used to be original and full of character. They gave the group a visual identity and a videography which felt unique. Perfume's visuals have always been as important as the music. But now we're getting boring-ass, uninspired music videos at a time when YouTube is such a huge factor in music, record labels are actually investing in music videos again, and Perfume have the largest audience they've ever had. And whilst you could argue that Perfume's songs haven't been great and have therefore gotten the music videos they deserved; I think we can all agree that "Polygon Wave" was a surprise bucking of a trend of mediocre songs, and that it deserved a far better video than this shit.
This music video right here was a boring ass representation of both the group and the song. It sold neither. All it sold was a car.
It's like all of the creativity and originality that used to go into Perfume's music videos is now channelled exclusively into their live shows, as though there isn't enough of it to go around. It's unfortunate, because Perfume deserve so better than phoned in music videos like this.
