The Sugababes perform “Push the Button” for a BBC shindig hosted by Jools Holland

Siobhan, Mutya and Keisha performing “Push the Button” on Jools Holland’s Annual Hootenanny.

Jools Holland held his Annual Hootenanny on New Year’s Eve, which is usually an absolute mess, because everybody is just drunk as hell and seems to forget they are being filmed. It’s crazy how messy this show can be and how much they keep in, despite it not being live. But there are always some fun moments and performances to glean from it all. And this year, we got a performance from the Sugababes.

The Sugababes’ comeback feels like it is taking an extremely long time. Slow and steady can win the race. But whilst it’s great that they’ve spent the past year gigging and getting spots for televised performances - to only have released one new single in the past year is a bit of a mess.

Based on how well received their performance of “Push the Button” was and (whilst Taylor Swift sales aren’t always comparable to, well...anybody) how well Taylor Swift’s re-releases are doing, I think the Sugababes should re-record their second, third and fourth albums with the OG line-up. They have long been touring songs from each of these albums with some new arrangements and verse swapping. Committing them to recordings and re-releasing their older albums gives fans more material of Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan, answering the question of ‘What would those albums have sounded like had Siobhan returned from the toilet’. Not only does it cash in on nostalgia, but it eases the pressure of wondering how anybody will react to brand new material and buys the ladies some time until they get the situation with their new material, record labels, etc. figured out.

I already own copies of Angels with Dirty Faces, Three and Taller in More Ways, but would absolutely buy them again if they were re-released with newly recorded vocals, revised arrangements and Siobhan in the mix. And they could even re-record the Three and Taller In More Ways B-sides, just to give fans a little something extra.

Of course, everybody would like a new album. But the Sugababes seem to be moving so slow with new shit and seem so content at the moment just playing all of the old stuff, that they may as well run with it and just re-record old albums.
