“Boukyaku” was one of my favourite songs on Utada’s 2016 comeback album, Fantôme. I really liked how the song took its time — it’s over a minute until we hear any vocals. Kelela’s “Washed Away” has a very similar vibe. Yet despite these similarities, both songs are about the opposite of one another. “Boukyaku” is about an inability to let something go, where-as “Washed Away” is about already being on your journey of letting things go. So the juxtaposition of the weight of the music of “Boukyaku” and the freeness of Kelela’s vocals from “Washed Away” creates something which I think is pretty cool.
Slight side note. I will start to post my mixes and mashups over a new spot: Random J Mixes & Mashups. I’m still in the process of getting everything I’ve posted up on there, but 90% of it up. I get that some of you are just here for reviews and what-not and not my lil’ mixes and mashups. So for all 2 of you who do listen to / like my mashups, they’ll be posted over at www.randomjmixes.blogspot.com.
