Japanese music duo Yoasobi performed at Music Awards Japan. And their entire set was basically ‘Let everybody know we got that PlayStation money’. But the cool thing about this — aside from being great promo for PlayStation and leveraging of the fact that Yoasobi is signed to Sony Music Japan — is that the PlayStation tie-in of the song “Players” makes sense for the group and their whole thing of being big about telling fictional stories through songs. Because what are video games, if not interactive stories persevering. Or
whatever Vision said.
Nintendo probably turned the TV off as soon as they saw this shit. But I really enjoyed this performance. The concept was cool. But what I liked most about this performance was Ikura’s energy. She was performing on a big ass stage at a prestigious award show, with the same look and energy as if she was performing to fans in the basement of some club in Shibuya. She said ‘I don’t give a fuck that this is an award show. Y’all gon’ get this PlayStation song and clap to it.’ And I really dig that.
It’s so easy for acts to have an identity crisis when it comes to performing at big awards shows and I’m glad to see Yaosobi didn’t succumb to that.
