Korean rapper Luci Gang has me in a headlock with “Headlock”

Luci Gang got me with this one y’all. This is by no means a new release. But those of you who have checked out this blog long enough know how I be on severe delays with posts and that I post on ‘old’ shit all of the time. I’ve been telling myself (and some of you) that I want to post more on cool music that I hear and like. So, this is me doing that. For now.

Okay Korean Az****a B**ks.

When you consume a lot of K-pop and are knee deep in it, sometimes it can end up with you making a lot of generalisations about Korean music. But something I see a lot amongst younger fans, is that they become so tunnel visioned when it comes to K-pop, that K-pop becomes their standard for music generally. K-pop visuals become their standard. K-pop beauty becomes their standard. K-pop rapping becomes their standard. So when stuff comes along that doesn’t fit their K-pop standard or criteria, it gets rejected. And this is largely why I think so many fans continue to refute the statement that ‘Black music and culture is one of the biggest influences on K-pop’. And that’s when you realise ‘Oh. So you’re actually not in this for the talent and creativity at all?’. But that’s a whole other post.

The point is that there is a lot of great music coming out of Korea outside of K-pop. And whilst some of us are dismissive of things like how bad rapping in K-pop tends to be, there are Korean rappers who are actually kinda fire — such as Luci Gang.
