JoJo has released what is in fact the first single from her upcoming album Good To Know "Man", as the official tracklisting for her upcoming album revealed that "Joanna" and "Sabotage" aren't on it.
I am here for JoJo. REALLY fucking here for JoJo. But this song didn't do a great deal for me on a first listen the way "Joanna" or even "Sabotage" did. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. The subject matter of the song is great and one I'm sure many can relate to.
Hearing this as not just a song, but as a single made me think about JoJo's single choices in general and how they've not been all that great. The last song which she released that had real potential to be a smash hit was "When Love Hurts". None of the singles from Mad Love were good, despite the album having songs ("Mad Love", "Honest", "Good Thing") which would have made for great singles.
My hangup with "Man" is that whilst it's a smooth little bop, it doesn't feel like enough of a showcase of JoJo. When JoJo did an Instagram live, she sang a little of "Man" and gave more of what I wish she'd given on this song. I don't need JoJo to be belting and doing the most, but give the people a taste. Especially on a song that's your lead single with you having been away from radio for so long.
JoJo should be treating this phase of her career and this new album as a re-introduction to the world. It's been a minute since Mad Love last came out and it wasn't like Mad Love was this huge tentpole success of an album that left huge ripples. Mad Love felt like a case of just getting SOMETHING out in the midst of fear. But now she's in a position where she has a bigger platform, her name is out there in a way it wasn't 4 years ago and she's in a position to really get the hit and the moment she deserves. I feel that "Man" would have made a far better second single as opposed to a first. But maybe that's just me.
I don't think the song is bad at all. I just don't think it's a great first single. But the fans all love it and it's doing well on the
JoJo also needs herself a good creative director, because gurl...these videos. "Joanna" was a serve. "Sabotage" had a great concept, but poor execution. And now there's this video looking like a TikTok. The scenes of JoJo dancing were so hot and shoulda been the whole damn video. Given that we've not really seen JoJo come with a routine. And no, I'm not counting the air traffic controlling she did in "When Love Hurts". JoJo introducing a side to herself we've not yet seen in aesthetic that matches the promo shots for the album, including the single cover for the song itself would have done the song a stronger justice. And if she'd done a lil' s'um with Tinashe too!? Hair pieces woulda been strewn across the floor.
