Sonikku and LIZ give us an 80s throwback with "WKND" | Random J Pop

London born DJ Sonikku is preparing to release his debut album Joyful death and has released the latest single from it "WKND" which is co-written by Little Boots, Greg Kurstin and features LIZ who also featured on Sonikku 2019's release "Sweat".

The timing of this song's release could not have been worse, as its been completely swallowed up in the release of Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love". Which is unfortunate, because "WKND" is a great song. One that I prefer over "Stupid Love" and one that (as much as I adore LIZ on this) Lady Gaga herself would sound great on.

The 80s made a resurgence in Pop circa 2004 and it's not shown any sign of leaving since. No complaints from me. Good 80s Pop is my weakness and Sonikku nailed the vibe with "WKND", a song which deserves to be a hit and get all of the radio play, but probably won't. And then there's LIZ, who everybody stays sleeping on and can't seem to catch herself a break, even when she's putting out her own fire.

It's depressing.

And if any of you are wondering 'Ooooh, Sonikku is such an 'exotic' name'. It's literally the Hepburn romanisation of the word 'Sonic'. As in Sonic the hedgehog. Because DJ Sonikku is a massive Sonic fan and got into music as a result of his Mega Drive. Relatable. I was into music long before I got into gaming, but gaming gave me a new appreciation of music as a whole besides just Pop and chart music. And whilst Sonic games have been patchy since the 32-bit era, there is no denying that the games have consistently had good soundtracks. And Streets of Rage II's music still sounds amazing to this day.

So there ya go.

One quick thing. Could somebody check on Tommy february6. She's probably gagging over this song.

Sonikku's debut album Joyful Death releases on April 17th.
