Random J Playlist: Written by Emyli

Emyli. Those of you who have been listening to ALL the J-music for a while may recall the name. Most likely from an M-Flo release, where she featured on a couple of their singles from the Beat Space Nine album, when M-Flo were at their hottest.

But Emyli has written many songs that you know for some of the biggest artists in J-Pop and K-Pop, featuring in the liner notes of albums from Namie Amuro, EXILE, E-Girls, Blackpink and 2PM.

Emyli started out as a solo artist back in 2003, but saw very little success until she started working with M-Flo, which also opened doors for her songwriting career which has been steady ever since.

Female songwriters are such a fixture in J-Pop that it's unreal, but you seldom see a spotlight on them. Gender equality at play: Yes. But I don't think it's a gender thing exclusively, as songwriters and producers just aren't spotlit or made celebrities of in Japan as they commonly are in the West. It'd be nice to see that change though.
