When I heard that BloodPop was behind this song, I was a little concerned, given that I didn't like much of what he did on Lady Gaga's Chromatica. I just find his productions to be very flat. They sound great for the first minute, but then they wear off really quickly and don't stick.
"Lucid" sounds like a Chromatica cut that got handed off to Rina. And given that she's such a massive Lady Gaga fan, she probably see's no problem with that. "Lucid" isn't a bad song at all. But it's not one I'd ever listen to with the level of regularity that I do songs from Rina or the regular edition of Sawayama. It sounds more like a continuation of the theme and sounds of "Cherry" and "Flicker" than it does a song for Sawayama. I do really like the lyrics though, as it speaks to Rina's sexuality, just as "Cherry" did. It's a shame she didn't drop this during Pride month or hold it back until Pride month next year. But who knows if we'll get to see tomorrow to hold shit back.
"Lucid" is great fodder for radio. I can see this getting more airplay than anything Rina has put out so far, because it sounds like the dime a dozen songs which occupy the top 20 charts in the UK. Slightly depressing. It's not like "XS" and "Comme des Garçons (Like The Boys)" had NO commercial appeal.
And peaking of Sawayama, a deluxe edition of the album will be dropping on December 4th, which features 3 new songs (including "Lucid") a cover, acoustic versions of songs from Sawayama and the "XS" and "Comme des Garçons (Like The Boys)" remixes.
