Hikaru Utada gets that train money, as their new song “Intentions” features in JR’s campaign for their new Shinkansen Supreme Class Cabins

Hikaru Utada has a new song on the way. And because Teruzane don’t play when it comes to the tie-in cheques for his child — this new song features in JR Central’s new campaign for the Supreme Class Cabins of their Shinkansen (Bullet Trains).

The song is titled “Intentions” and it was teased earlier this month (unofficially) via an Instagram story posted by drummer Leo Taylor, who often works with Floating Points.

I really like how the song sounds. It’s a nice shift from styles of “Mine or Yours” and “Pappa Paradise”. I do like that sound, but it is nice to have a shift in gears and hear something that’s a bit more electronic. “Intentions” sounds like it has the sonics of Ultra Blue and Heart Station, but with the warmth of Bad Mode. Given the Floating Points of it all, I’m sure what sits either side of the snippet will be a journey. I cannot wait to hear the full thing.

I am so glad that Hikaru and Floating Points are still working together. They have a great musical chemistry. The Floating Points productions on Bad Mode were all highlights for me. And having tuned into their NTS Radio show a few weeks ago, I got a clearer sense of why the two of them are friends and click musically.

And if you’re planning a trip to Japan, have the coin and want to ride bougie, the supreme class cabins will be available on the Tokaido (Tokyo → Shin Osaka) and Sanyo (Tokyo → Hakata) Shinkansen lines from 1st October.

There is currently no release date for “Intentions”, but we know how this goes — we’ll get a date further down the line. And given that Hikaru Utada and Sony have been going all in on vinyl lately, even for singles — it’s highly likely that “Intentions” will get a vinyl release too.
