Music video: Mariah Carey cries over some tennis in "Save The Day"

Mariah Carey cries over some tennis in the "Save The Day" music video | Random J Pop

Mariah has given us a music video for "Save The Day", which isn't a montage of fans singing the song as I expected we'd get, given that we're still in a pandemic, Mariah is all about not leaving the house and the song was released for the fans for sticking around with her to see the 30th year of her career. But given how this turned out... Gurl. I woulda taken a portrait mode video of fans lip syncing.

This video was basically "I Don't" at the drive-in.

The sentiment of the video honouring women in tennis was cool, but it's not an obvious connection I'd make to the song, even with how broad the message of the song itself is. Given all we've seen of 2020 thus far, having this video address the people who are literally helping to save the day would have been so much better. First responders, doctors, nurses, everybody who works in the medical fields, porters, sanitation workers, Black lives matter protesters, folk working in retail. But US Open opened their purse to Mariah to make it about tennis. At least she dedicated it to the women and told the person in charge of putting the footage together 'Show the Black women the most'.

I like the message behind the video, it's just that the execution feels really clumsy and it narrows the scope of the song. There's also a real disconnect between the campaign the song is releasing as part of (Mariah's 30th anniversary), the message of the song (hanging in there and pulling through) and the video (Women in tennis). Not to say the three are mutually exclusive, but they all could have been tied together better than this.
