With the release of  her cover album still TBC, Crystal Kay hopped on Instagram to sing one of Toni Braxton's biggest hits "Un-break My Heart". There was no intro or explanation as to why. Maybe it'll appear on her upcoming album maybe it won't. But regardless, it was great hearing her sing it.

Crystal has such a nice lower register that she's been gradually moving into with more regularity since Spin The Music. Crystal had said when she appeared on the Jinjja Cha podcast that she actually favours singing low and that she deliberately makes the choice to sing low when and where she can, in order to preserve her voice. Although she admitted that Japanese music favours higher keys in just about everything, hence why she's unable to avoid them completely.

Toni Braxton's "Un-break My Heart" is a popular song for female singers with range to sing. Especially those whose voices aren't as naturally low as Toni Braxton's, possibly for some respite from singing high all the damn time and to train their voices in registers they don't usually sing in. It takes skill to cover "Un-break My Heart" well. People think high notes are the measure of singing, but it's truly not. It takes just as much agility and breath control to sing strong, with tone and good resonance in lower registers as it does to sing in higher ones. Which is why I always find it odd when people write Toni and Brandy off as not being able to sing just because they sing low. Both ladies could sing most of your faves under a bus, and both of their voices still sound great now, if not better than they did before, because they've never had to put crazy strain on their voices singing high-ass notes their entire careers. So it truly is no wonder Crystal wants to sing low more.

HENNYWAY.

I would not be mad if Crystal's cover album featured a cover of "Un-break My Heart". If the damn album ever releases.
