Back in 2019 Crystal Kay made her stage debut as The Leading Player in Pippin, marking the first time that the show had run in Japan. And it was such a hit that it will be running for a second time in 2022, with Crystal Kay reprising the role as The Leading Player.
The unfortunate thing for CK fans wanting new music is that her Broadway stint will probabaly mean that music will take a back seat. It was crazy to me that her management company and label LDH didn't try to cross promote Crystal's involvement with Pippin into any form of music release. They pretty much put the brakes on all music, which was insane to me. Crystal's 2021 cover album was in stages of conception whilst she was a part of Pippin, so I figured that maybe the album would release whilst she's in the show, and that we'd get a Broadway cover or SOMETHING. But nope. So I really do hope that Crystal and her team get their acts together and start synergising some shit, because Crystal can't keep missing these clear opportunities to promote shit and having these long gaps between music releases
HENNYWAY.
I'm happy for Crystal. After a year of not being able to perform in big venues and feeling concerned for her career, knowing she's got a Broadway gig in the bag is going to be a massive confidence booster and a form of security for her.
Once again, I'mma say that Crystal needs to start officially vlogging and moving her shit from Instagram to YouTube. It'd be great to see behind the scenes footage of her in rehearsals for Pippin, spilling tea on her workout and dieting regime whilst she's on Broadway, and all that stuff. Crystal will probabaly share a lot of this shit for her makenai mondays on Instagram, which she started mid pandemic, but she needs to get a team together and start shooting and editing some vlog shit professionally, and monetising it on YouTube. Crystal Kay has shown herself to be personable and open in a way that's refreshing for a Japanese pop star, and her personality and the way in which she carries herself would make her a popular vlogger if she pursued it. And her having a Japanese and English audience, and being able to create content for both of them would allow her to occupy a unique space.

Crystal Kay spoke highly of how much she enjoyed being a part of Pippin, and caught the Broadway bug, resulting in her nabbing the role of Motormouth Maybelle for the Japanese run of Hairspray - which unfortunately got cancelled due to COVID taking its own show on the road. Crystal Kay must be over the moon that she gets to feel her Broadway oats again, and that she was asked by the Pippin production team to return. Not to shit on no parades, but most of The Leading Players I've seen have all been Black women. And there's probabaly a shortage of Black Japanese women in Japan who can speak Japanese and English and SING sing. But that's no bad thing. Because that means as long as Pippin runs in Japan, Crystal is gonna stay booked. And if a decision is made in the future to try again with Hairspray, then Crystal will get that call too. Because, again...Black, Japanese, can sing.
