JoJo is not taking her foot of the gas FOR SHIT. Despite not having the budget and resources of other artists, JoJo finessed her way through performing, promoting and releasing music through the pandemic, and she's STILL doing. With "American Mood" seemingly being a little side thing, it also appears that JoJo's last single "Creature of Habit" was also a little side thing, as her latest single "Worst (I Assume)" has been referred to by JoJo herself as the first song to be lifted from her EP which is set to release on October 1, 2021.Shooting a music video with a dance routine in a top with no straps or support when you've got titties like JoJo's is a type of bravery. I salute her.
The only thing I wanted more of in this video was choreo from JoJo. And it woulda been cool if the whole thing was one take and moved into the convenience store. Still, this was a cute video for what it was.
As for the song. Well, umm.
JoJo's music as of Mad Love has been frustratingly middling to me on the whole and not reflective of what I know JoJo can deliver. She'll give me a good song here and there, but nothing more. I genuinely think that part of it is JoJo wanting to work with lesser known writers and producers, because maybe a part of her still feels scarred from how her career ended up the first time around when she had a record label who was putting her in the studio with known and established names. And maybe she feels she'd be compared to other artists in the machine if she went that route or working with a Max Martin, a Pharrell or a Justin Tranter. But I really do feel that JoJo needs better writers and producers who can craft songs which are better earworms and actually stick. So little of what JoJo has put out over the past 5 years has managed to touch the heights of what she'd done on her debut, The High Road or her mixtapes.
JoJo is releasing, what she's referring to as 'a capsule project' Trying Not to Think About It on October 1st. I really wish artists would stop using all of these other terms for their releases and just call them what the fuck they are. An EP. Jazmine Sullivan was calling Heaux Tales a project, a this and a that, everything but what it actually was - an EP. Victoria Monét was out here calling Jaguar 'a project', when it was an EP. Now JoJo is out here with 'capsule project'. STOP IT.
Whilst I'm glad that JoJo is releasing a constant stream of music, I do wish her team would just have her release a 12 track album and be regular with it. Or drop things at the right time. "Joanna" should not have been some one off song. That shoulda been an EP release right there. And the Deluxe edition of Good to Know is what the standard edition with its 9 tracks barely-not-an-EP-ass-self should have been.
