Crystal Kay is about to become one of the YouTube gworls

She finally fucking did it ya’ll.

Crystal Kay has launched an official YouTube channel. After 21 years of this singing shit, she's finally done it.

I’ve been in Crystal’s comments for years asking non stop ‘YouTube channel when?’. She recently put up an Insta story poll up of what we’d like to see from her in 2022 and I said ‘YouTube channel when?’. And now it’s here.

There’s only one video on it at the moment, and the channel is not looking OFFICIAL official. The header is raggedy. There is no detailed About section. No links to Crystal's Insta or Twitter accounts. The channel isn’t verified. I have no idea what the criteria is to get verified on YouTube, but surely Crystal being a recording artist signed to big label like Universal would help expedite that. There are several Crystal Kay YouTube channels, even one which is called Official Crystal Kay, which Crystal herself in the video says isn’t even her official channel. So a bitch needs to get the account verified and looking official.

Makenai Monday (January 24, 2022) | Instagram @ crystalkayofficial

During her weekly Insta live called Makenai Monday on January 24th, Crystal had said that the decision to launch a YouTube channel was to have all of her content in one place. And it's crazy to me that it took all of this time for somebody in Crystal’s team to have had this realisation, when it’s been a problem for a long-ass time, and one that fans have been vocal about. It took too long for Crystal’s Sony catalog to end up on streaming services worldwide, and even now songs are still missing. Fans have been asking for official uploads of music videos, and got so tired of waiting, that they started uploading music videos on their own CK channels which low key look official.

Japanese artists in Japan having somebody in their team who is really plugged into what their online presence and profile is isn’t common, and it’s a problem for artists like Crystal whose online profile has always been fragmented and doesn’t reflect a 20 year plus deep career. I don't think anybody in CK’s team has realised that there is actually an official CK YouTube channel which is tied to her YouTube Music profile and all of her digital releases on the platform. And that when Crystal tried doing the whole music thing in New York, there was an official YouTube channel for that. And that when Crystal moved from Sony to Universal, there was an official Vevo channel, which started with “Superman” and ended with “Shiawase tte”. And yet somebody made Crystal create a new YouTube account, instead of taking the reigns of the existing ‘official’ account which already has 7,000 subscribers?

Girl. Fire the whole management and marketing team.

The one video Crystal Kay has uploaded to her new YouTube channel has production value. So she clearly has a team or somebody helping her with this shit. She needs to get them to fix up her branding, playlists, and all the housekeeping stuff. And LDH need to send their girl a proper camera and some equipment. But at least there is production and an editing style at work, which is very Japanese variety-show, which I think is great.

I don’t speak Japanese. But a lot of what Crystal said in the first half of the video appeared to be what she covered when speaking about YouTube channel on her January 24th Makenai Monday. And then the latter half seemed to be Crystal giving a background on who she is and where she’s from; born in Yokohama, father was in the navy, she went to an American school in Japan - all the stuff that fans would know.

This channel seems to be fresh for people who may be new to Crystal, which is why I think it’s important that her team really starts putting a plan together to make her channel look legit and start displaying her music on it getting a hold of her music videos. Crystal nor her team seem to make much of the wealth of what Crystal has put out over the course of her two decade long career. So hopefully this channel will be a way for them to honour and celebrate that.

Crystal had said in an Insta caption promoting her new YouTube channel that she’ll be using this channel to post behind-the-scene contents and singing stuff.
Finally started an official YouTube channel! I’m hoping to show more of me and the behind the scenes as well as fun singing content can’t believe I’m saying this but, “make sure y’all like and subscribe” hehe. Super looking forward to this new journey with you guys!!
It’s probably going to be her singing at home as opposed to live and televised performances, because her management is so trash, that’s she doesn’t do either of these with any frequency. Crystal also didn’t mention anything about music videos, so I wonder if this is just going to be a side channel. If this is in the intent, than I’mma need to object. But let’s see how the channel shakes up.

Eventually, Crystal will need to move Makenai Monday to YouTube. I’m not watching a whole ass 1 hour live or video on Instagram, and I'm sure I’m not the only one. Now that Crystal is on YouTube, she can leverage things like notifications, premieres, and she can still do livestreams on a platform which is more manageable when it comes to comments, whilst still allowing people to actually use their phones.

One thing (of many) I would urge Crystal to do is get translators to close captions all of the videos. So whether she’s speaking in Japanese or English, her fans will know what’s up. And it will save Crystal have to switch between the two, and play the speaker and interpreter, as she often does in her Instagram lives. I was expecting it for this YouTube video...but didn’t get it. So I’mma need captions sweetie.

I really do hope that Crystal Kay and her team commits to this YouTube channel. It seems like such a small thing, but there’s power in YouTube as an artist. So many of the artists who have come up in the past 8 or so years have managed to do a great job of growing their fanbases online. Kenshi Yonezu, Aimyon and Kaze Fuji are great examples of this generation of artists who harnessed the Internet and platforms like YouTube to become popular. And then you've got artists from a generation or two prior such as Ayaka, who are realising the power of YouTube and are knee deep in it. Not only is Crystal super active online, but she gets the online culture. And unlike new artists, Crystal has a legacy and a career history which is still rich, and keeping the older fans like myself still checking for her, even when the music is doo-doo. So there's so much that Crystal can play with, and for her to gain if she and her team play it right.

So if you’re a CK fan, be sure to support her channel and hit her up on Instagram with what you’d like to see.
