PinkPanthress drops “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”, with an assist from Ice Spice and her faded Ronald McDonald wig

PinkPanthress and Ice Spice on a New York subway train, surrounding by a bunch of other girls, having them a good time.

Whether you like it or not, Ice Spice is the girl of the moment. A lot of these up and coming rap girls (and boys) really aren’t that great at rapping, but they all come out with a specific look and angle which just seems to click and resonate with an audience. Maybe not an audience who buys and streams their shit in high numbers...

But an audience which will obsess over them online and make them a part of the pop culture conversation. PinkPanthress is in a similar boat. And she saw an opportunity with Ice Spice, and she took it. And it’s paying off massively. Because whilst I had heard of PinkPanthress before, I had NEVER heard “Boy’s a Liar”. So, when this song started appearing everywhere and I saw “Pt. 2” in the title, I said ‘When was there even a Part 1!?’. And it turns out the song was a hit in the UK?!

PinkPanthress cannot sing. And Ice Spice’s rapping leaves a lot to be desired. But this is a good song which will cut across a whole bunch of different audiences. The hyperpop girls will like it. The pretty bitch rapper girls will like it. The whisper singing girls will like it. But the song also knocks, so even the steppers and rap heads will shimmy to it in the clubs.

PinkPanthress’ has been on a streak with solid singles, and making great choices when it comes to collaborators. So I will definitely be keeping an ear out for her album when it drops. Some of these acts of the Internet have a real knack for picking songs and guest features, and being their own A&R’s. Which is just as well with the way record labels have been cutting costs and like more of a DIY approach these days.
